Date published: 27 July 2010

The Big Games at Springhill Sports Centre on Saturday saw Rochdale borough take part in the national London 2012 Open Weekend.

London 2012 Open Weekend, supported by BP, is the annual countdown celebration to the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games on the 27 July 2012.

Now in its third year, Open Weekend has already enabled over a million people to take part in sport, arts and cultural events across the length and breadth of the UK. As part of the four year Cultural Olympiad programme, Open Weekend is one of the several projects aimed at adding excitement leading up to the 2012 Games and helping to create a lasting legacy.

Organised by Link4Life, and supported by local clubs and groups, people of all ages called in to enjoy the free activities available. These included the Watt bike challenge, indoor rowing and martial arts plus a range of track and field events, basketball and badminton. There was also the chance to take the Army powerbag fitness challenge.

Aimed at getting people trying something they haven’t before, the London Organising Committee, Lord Sebastian Coe thanked all those who took part. He said, “Thousands of people took on a challenge across the length and breadth of the UK in a brilliant example of the inspiration London 2012 provides.”
