International rugby comes to Rochdale

Date published: 07 July 2010

Mayfield Sports Centre is set to play host to the expanding Masters of Rugby League programme next week as they welcome the international fixture between Great Britain Masters and the touring Australian Masters side.

The Aussies arrive at Mayfield in the middle of a seventeen day five game tour and as always will be looking to come out victorious.

The idea of the masters’ game is that whatever the score in the match is, there are no losers. Everyone involved in the day is seen as a winner. That said, everyone will be aiming for victory!

Several of the GB team featured in a warm up game against a UK based New Zealand side in Brighouse last week and are currently rolling back the years regaining their match sharpness and fitness in preparation for the game next week.

A spokesperson from Mayfield Sports Centre said: “Featuring for Great Britain will be Mayfield player Ian Kershaw who at 49 and a half years old considers himself to be in his prime, another local lad, Joe Hart from Heywood, who still claims to be twenty one, has also been selected.

“Joe has played several games for the Mayfield masters side and, like Ian, is dying for a crack at the Aussies. Both will wear their countries colours with pride on Wednesday evening and a bumper crowd is expected to cheer the lads on.

“So come on down to Mayfield, its not often we get an international game in the area so make the most of it and shout for the boys.”

Great Britain Masters V Australian Masters will kick off at 7.30 at Mayfield Sports Centre on Wednesday 14 July.
