Sam Butterworth scores a try
Mayfield ARLFC announced this week that pre-season training resumes on Tuesday 22 June.
Coach Sam Butterworth has put down his marker early on, saying: “If you want to play like the best you’ve got to train like the best."
To this end he announced: “We will be holding three training sessions per week, Tuesday 6:15, Thurs 6:15 and Sat 1:30.
“Initially all three sessions will be held at the club.
“If the players want to improve on last seasons performances it is important that they all attend, we finished the season on a high and I want to start the new season the same way.
“Everyone is welcome old players and new so get your boots out and get down to Mayfield.”
Friendlies are being looked at for pre-season warm ups and it’s hoped a visit from Yorkshire side Sharlston will be confirmed soon.
Already confirmed is the Mayfield 9’s this competition was initiated by Sammy Sampson last year and was, thanks to Sammy’s hard work, a great success.
Invites are out and most teams have already responded so another great day of rugby is on the cards at the Mayfield Sports centre.
The tournament will be held on sat 7th August, but there will be more on this nearer the date.
It was hoped that there would be an announcement this week about a new assistant to Sam but negotiations are still underway.
Still at Butterworth’s side on a Saturday will be his dad, Alec, offering all the help he can as well as aiding with the fitness at training during the week.
It was with much sadness that Alec lost his wife, Phyllis, last month, after a long struggle with illness.
Phyllis was a familiar face at the club and will be missed by all who knew her.
All at Mayfield offer our heartfelt condolences to Alec and his family.
