Is young boxing star Raza Hamza destined for the Olympics?
Raza Hamza of Hopwood Hall College’s Boxing Academy has won his fourth national title against Mohammed Waqqas, the 2009 National Champion from Durham. Raza outclassed Waqqas from the opening bell, winning the contest by a massive 18 points to 4.
Throughout the first round, Raza worked well behind the jab and scored with excellent counters to the head of his opponent; so he was three points up going into the second round.
Then Raza picked up the tempo and again scored freely with his jab and right cross to the head and body of his now tiring opponent.
In the third round, Raza simply counter-punched Waqqas, giving a master class in skilful boxing; he went into the fourth and final round, leading by a fantastic 12 points to 3.
The final round was again started at a high tempo and he quickly had the points racking up against his opponent. Raza drew his opponent onto some excellent counters and then pivoted off both angles and again scored freely with both hands. Waqqas was simply given a lesson in the noble art of boxing.
Raza has been picked to represent England in a Tri- Nations tournament in July and has surely made the selectors think about the Great Britain Podium spot for the 2012 Olympics Games in London.
