Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club

Date published: 17 May 2024

The sailing club at Hollingworth Lake had a very busy weekend on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May.

On Saturday, the club hosted a North West Youth and Junior Travellers Event for the RYA. 40 young sailors were out racing from all over the North West. The sunny conditions and easterly wind made for a buzz of activity. Toppers were the most numerous boats and had very tight racing, with lots of position changes throughout the races.

The host club had some great results, with Jasper Bramwell, U19 winner overall, and Jessica Marsh, overall 3rd place, and leading U14 winner. In 10th place overall came Millie Hayfield and Lauren Marsh, in a RS200, leading double handed boat.

On Sunday, the club hosted an open event for Lasers, now known as Ilca dinghies. 18 sailors competed in this event where the younger sailors showed the older ones how skilled they were in an easterly wind that grew stronger as the day wore on.

Lasers have three different sails which can help lighter weight sailors compete. This showed in the results with Lewis Bacon, from Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club, using a radial sail winning overall, followed by Henry Redmond from Covenham as runner up with the standard sail. Third place overall was Jasper Bramwell, also using a radial sail and 4th overall was Richard Marsh again using a standard sail.
