The brand new Rochdale Masters met Weetwood from Leeds in an entertaining and enjoyable encounter at Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday 14 August. As the rules dictate - the match was a draw and in actual fact, it was a draw with both teams scoring a try.
Officially, there are no winners in the Masters games as the game focuses on encouraging older players back to the sport and supporting grassroots clubs whilst having fun.
Weetwood needed a few Rochdale players to make up their 13 and in true Masters spirit, the locals obliged.
Weetwood are an experienced Masters team and included at least 7 'gold short' players. That effectively closes so much space down as they only have to make a touch tackle. Rochdale struggled to break this down but eventually Adam Browne got by on the end of some fine passing and support play to register his third try in as many games.
In the second-half both teams exchanged strong attacks and local rugby league legend, Syd Miller, began to get to grips with the new format. However it was the visitors who took advantage of some speedy interplay and scored wide on the right.
That concluded the scoring and as the referee blew time, both teams walked off having achieved the best outcome - everyone safe after an enjoyable game.
Training is held at the home of Rochdale Mayfield ARLFC, in Castleton, every Friday from 6-7pm - everyone is welcome.
