Rugby league: Rochdale Masters play first fixture

Date published: 23 July 2021

Rochdale’s Masters of rugby league side put on a great game of rugby when facing Bury Broncos Masters on Saturday (17 July) in their first fixture since forming.

A good-sized crowd at Mayfield enjoyed a great game of rugby played by some great names from the past, including several ex-professionals amongst the ranks: Andy Duffy, Dave Chrimes and Richard Yeomans all putting good shifts in.

Officially, there are no winners in the Masters games as the game focuses on playing in great spirit.

It’s hard to single out players in this type of game, but everyone left the pitch with a huge smile on their faces.

Adam Browne had a cracking game showing he still has that touch of class as he put Anthony Greaves away for the first score. Browne himself grabbed Rochdale’s other score as he took the ball on his own line, threw eight dummies and then sprinted the full length to touch down under the sticks.

One of the highlights of the game was when Wiggy made a superb ball and all tackle to ensure Bury didn't manage a score.

Organiser Carl Abraham said: “I’d like to thank everyone helped in putting the event on, Jason the water boy worked hard in the day’s heat, and Emma Patterson’s help was invaluable, from physio to organising the kitchen. Thank you too to the Mayfield committee and club for hosting.

“Special thanks goes to the Stephen Gartland Foundation for their donation which enabled the team to purchase a new kit, proudly displaying the SG6 logo.”

If anyone else would like to sponsor the side, please contact Carl on 07792826918.
