Taekwondo: Rochdale siblings take gold and silver at British National Championships

Date published: 29 October 2018

Two Rochdale siblings took a gold and silver medal at the British Taekwondo National Championships in Sheffield on Saturday (27 October).

Hayat İqbal Bhatti, 15, a student at Matthew Moss high school won gold, and her brother, Adil Iqbal Bhatti, won silver in his category.

Mayor’s consort, Mohammed Sheraz, said: “Hayat and Adil’s mother is very proud of their achievements and has encouraged young people to become actively involved in sports. She has encouraged her children to get involved and practise, and their success is down to never giving up home and being self-confident in their abilities.

“Despite the challenges they have faced in coming to Rochdale as asylum seekers, they have shown that hard work pays off – well done.”
