Rugby League: Mayfield preview

Date published: 27 September 2018

Mayfield A will play in the Division 1 play-off final at Latchford's Victoria Park ground on Saturday 29 September 2018.

The Rochdale side are going for back-to-back play-off championships after winning Division 2 last year.

Their opponents will be Cumbrian side Walney Central, Walney finished in second place just two points behind Mayfield.

In their two fixtures the honours were even with both sides winning their home fixtures, so a cracking game is in the offing.

Walney have not lost since July when they went down to Haresfinch and will come into this game full of confidence, but they will be up against the Division 1's team of the year in Mayfield.

This season has surpassed all expectations and the team have gone from strength to strength under the stewardship of Craig White and Neil Ramsden.

The goal at the beginning of the season was to consolidate and maybe finish in the top half of the table, so to finish league leaders and then to be competing in the play-off final is testament to both coaches and players alike.

The team has the perfect blend with older players and young up coming stars, with some U18s stepping into the breach when needed.

Rob Kershaw, John Foy and Mark Biggins have added much needed maturity to a relatively young group of players. Jack Rush, Joe Schofield, Zac Hartley and Corey Newsham have been the heartbeat of the side and the players have blended perfectly to make a team that will compete with anyone on the day.

Club Chairman Simon Howe said: “I couldn’t be prouder of these lads especially captain Rob Kershaw who has been exemplary all season. Also, the likes of Jackson Kelly, Sal Mahmood and Wayne Bannister who have stepped up when needed and always given a good account of themselves."

The game kicks off at 1.00pm and there is a coach going over, leaving Rochdale at 10.45am with limited spaces on a first come first served basis.
