Sailing: Crook and Townend win Club Championship at Hollingworth Lake

Date published: 26 September 2018

Steve Crook and Sally Townend powered their way to win the Club Championship at Hollingworth Lake on Sunday.

In their Merlin Rocket, they won races two and three and discarded fourth place in the first one. The gusty breeze blowing off the Lake Bank enabled them to fly their spinnaker to great effect.

All sailors had been graded into Gold, Silver and Bronze divisions. It was no surprise that Adam McGovern and Ellie Davies, in a GP14, were runners up after winning the first race.

They were challenged by Martin Brennan and Richard Long, also GP14, who were consistent and a single point behind. These sailors were best able to cope with the very shifty winds changing direction frequently.

An outstanding performance from one of the youngest sailors was Hector Droungas in a Topper, finishing second in race two and being the bronze fleet winner, ahead of those in the silver fleet. That category was won by Commodore Andy Carter with Alan Kirsh, in a GP14.
