Sunday League football in Castleton

Date published: 31 May 2018

Amateur football could soon be back in Castleton from September 2018 with the formation of a team to be based at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Keswick Street in Castleton.

There has been no adult football being played in the village since the demise of semi-pro side Rochdale Town, once known as Castleton Gabriel’s.

The aim is to make the team up from predominantly local residents who will compete in the Rochdale Sunday League from September 2018.

Mayfield RL club secretary said: “We now have a new Sport England pitch, as well as our main arena available to local sports teams. We felt that our ground is the spiritual home of football in the local area having once been the home of Cassi Gab’s well before rugby league was played on it, and we feel there is a demand for adult football to once again be played here.”

The new club - as yet unnamed - is looking for expressions of interest from volunteers to help to coach and administer the team as well as looking for players who want to be involved in the formation of the team.

A meeting to make the league application is planned for Monday 11 June - if you are interested, don’t delay as the team wants to put a strong application in front of the Rochdale Sunday League Committee that night.
