Boxing: Aman Afeez wins by unanimous decision

Date published: 28 May 2018

Aman Afeez, a 15-year-old from Hamer Amtauer Boxing Club, beat Salford City boxer Thomas O'Connor by unamimous decision at Higher Irlam Social Club.

Both boxers came out for round one and landed swift combination punches whilst trying to take the centre of the ring to impress the judges.

As the round progressed the Hamer boxer began to find his range with his jab which forced O'Connor onto the ropes and Afeez landed a heavy right hand, left hook combination, followed by another right hand to the jaw which clearly hurt O'Connor and he immediately used the ring to try and find some distance.

From there on it was Afeez who began to dictate the action as he continuously forced O'Conner onto the back foot with straight one, two combinations to the head to see out the round.

The bell rang for round two and Afeez continued to dictate the pace of the action as he forced O'Connor onto his back foot with fast double jab, right hand combinations  to the head.

O'Connor was on the ropes when the Hamer boxer landed a solid right hand which forced the Salford boxer to spin off the ropes with his head lowed whilst trying to find some distance but when he raised his head again Afeez landed another terrific right hand to the jaw. The referee immediately jumped in to administer O'Connor a standing eight count, before both boxers were allowed to continue.

O'Connor tried to get back into the contest, but he was also constantly lowering his head and received numerous warnings from the referee.

At the start of the third and final roun, the boxers met in the centre of the ring and exchanged punches.

O'Connor tried hard to get a foothold back into the contest but he was once again met by heavy punches from Afeez .

Afeez caught his opponent with uppercuts and hooks whilst O'Connor continued to lower his head but the referee stopped the bout to give O'Connor another warning about lowering his head.

The round continued with Afeez forcing the pressure and O'Connor lowing his head and when the bout ended Afeez had his hand raised in victory by unanimous decision.

Two young Hamer bozers also took part in skills bouts - where there is no decision.

First  was 10-year-old Austin Hennagan who met Harry Barto.

Both youngsters put in a good performance that had the crowd shouting encouragement to the boxers, and a boisterous round of applause at the end of the bout when the referee raised both their arms in appreciation.

10-year-old Charlie Braddock stepped into the ring for Hamer to meet Oscar McCann.

Both boxers showed determination as they traded punches in the centre of the ring throughout all three rounds, to the delight of the crowd.
