Mayfield NWML opened their season in the first division with a hard-fought victory against last year’s play-off finalists Widnes Tigers.

Mayfield went behind in the first minute and two mistakes saw Widnes come the length of the field and score on Mayfield’s right-hand side.

It was end-to-end until Mayfield scrum half Lewis Butterworth danced his way through the Widnes defence to put the ball over the line. Kelly kicking the two.

Lee Atkinson scored the second Mayfield try just before half time. Kelly converted.

The second half saw Widnes improve and scrappy Mayfield defending allowed them back in the game with a try scored off a neat chip. The kick was missed.

Wiht the game hanging in the balance, both teams were failing to capitalise on some fine opportunities, until with less than a minute to go Hurley carried four Widnes players over the line. Kelly sealed the win.
