Cycling: East Lancs Oliver Huszar achieves first category status

Date published: 30 August 2017

Oliver Huszar capped a fantastic season to date by riding and winning the Derby GP Scratch Race at the new velodrome in Derby.

Taking on a good field of riders Huszar took the spoils, which was a good result in itself, but of greater significance were the points won which took him above 200 points in the year, which elevated him to first category status.

He is the first East Lancs rider in the club's history to achieve this feat and it is very well deserved for the hard work he has put in this year.

On Saturday, Swift CC promoted their 10-mile time trial on the V718 course near Hull.

On a good day, the East Lancs fielded two riders in the event:

Bill Howarth recording 24:30 minutes.

Georgina Cape recorded 23:15 minutes to break the club’s 30-year-old women’s record at this distance.

There were several other good time trial performances over the Bank Holiday weekend as well with the following times recorded in the Withington Wheelers event on the seldom used J6/10 course near Siddington in Cheshire; Dave Ireland, 26:54mins; Karen Bailey, 28:35mins; and Roy Neild, 24:33mins.

To complete the road racing, Ben Trippier rode the 60-mile Squadra CC Race near York on Sunday.

The race averaged 23mph on a lumpy course with no break away being able to establish itself and so on the last of six laps the peloton was all together until a rider from Buxton CC slipped away almost unnoticed to take the win. Trippier leadi the bunch sprint up hill to the finish and secured third place.

The club fielded two car assisted rides over the weekend in addition to the normal social rides, both of which were well attended, starting and finishing in Longridge after rides in the Trough of Bowland and the lanes around Garstang.
