Rochdale 0 - 0 Bury

Date published: 26 August 2017

The local derby between Rochdale and Bury ended in stalemate despite Bury playing for 35 minutes with 10 men after goalkeeper Joe Murphy was sent off for handling outside of his area.

Dale’s Jordan Williams came closest to breaking the deadlock when he was denied by Leo Fasan, Murphy’s replacement, who pushed away Williams’ close range effort.

With injuries and illness sweeping through the Rochdale camp, manager Keith Hill made four changes from the midweek defeat at Stoke City in the EFL Cup. Jim McNulty returned to the starting eleven whilst Jordan Williams, Steven Davies and Jamie Allen were also given the nod.

The Dale faithful were almost given the perfect start when a long ball upfield inside the first 30 seconds saw Jordan Williams give chase and wriggling free before crossing to Henderson - the captain's shot at the near post deflected wide for a corner.

At the other end, Andy Cannon’s dangerous back pass was almost seized upon by Jermaine Beckford but Brendan Moore was quickly out to smother the danger.

The Dale manager had to make an early change after full back Kgosi Ntlhe landed awkwardly; former Bury player Reece Brown replaced him.

Steven Davies had to be replaced at the start of the second half. The striker suffering with illness and Bradden Inman coming on to replace him.

Matty Done almost capitalised on a poor back pass with Nathan Cameron just about getting back to put a halt on the Dale striker. Henderson’s follow up off target.

The big talking point of the game came nine minutes into the second half when Bury’s goalkeeper was sent off after handling outside the area. McGahey’s long ball looked like an easy pick for Murphy but as the ball held up, the keeper gathered the ball a yard outside the area with referee Mr Brooks brandishing the straight red card.

Bury defended resolutely with Dale trying to make the numerical advantage count but they just couldn’t get the breakthrough.

Matt Done’s tenacity kept the ball alive when it looked certain to drift behind for a goal kick and when he laid off to Williams, the summer arrival from Barrow thought he had got his first Dale goal, but was denied by a one-handed save by Fasan.

In the end the spoils were shared and with Dale being down to the bare bones in terms of available players, it could well be a good point later in the season.
