Rugby League: Mayfield preview

Date published: 27 July 2017

In form Mayfield travel to face Cumbrian side Kells on Saturday in the Kingstone press NCL Premier Division.

Mayfield are playing well at and last week’s great win at St Pat's has boosted their confidence even more.

At this stage of the season it’s important to keep winning, although finishing top is not going to happen there is a distinct advantage to finishing in the top three, thereby gaining home advantage in the play offs.

Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth will have their work cut out when it comes to team selection, having a strong young squad with plenty of competition for places.

This is great news for the club and bodes well for the future.

There were some good performances last week with Luke Fowden impressing along with other, now established young players like Matty Ashton, Matty Chrimes, Lee Registe and Dec Sheridan.

A win at Kells would be a great achievement and would make that third place more achievable and Calland and Butterworth have impressed that on their side this week with a prolonged video session to illustrate their short comings last week and to try to build on them.

The Mayfield NWML side play hosts to Bury Broncos, who are in the bottom half of the table.

There will be no complacency from Dave Harmer and Marvin Connolly’s side though after last week's unexpected defeat to Widnes Tigers.

Tigers are now in second place with games in hand and could go top if they won them all.

With that in mind Mayfield also have to go out and win all their games and not give their rivals the chance to make up more ground on them.

Connolly was bitterly disappointed with last week’s defeat saying: “With the quality we have in our side we should not be losing games like that.

"We have worked hard this week to right the wrongs and will be hoping for victory on Saturday.”.
