Rochdale lost their latest pre-season friendly on Tuesday night when second half substitute Ike Ugbo scored twice at the Crown Oil Arena to give Barnsley victory.

Playing towards Sandy Lane, Dale created the best chances in a goalless first half but for all their endeavour could not find a way through a resolute Barnsley defence.

Callum Camps had the best of those chances but his powerful shot from outside the penalty area brought a terrific save from Nick Townsend in the Barnsley goal as he tipped the ball over the bar.

Late in the first half a Calvin Andrew shot, again from distance, was just inches wide with Townsend caught off guard.

Early in the second half, Rochdale had the ball in the back of the net but Andrew's goal was chalked off by the referee for offside.

Whilst Dale had more possession and the better chances up until the hour mark, it was Barnsley who broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when Ugbo had the easiest of tasks after Josh Lillis in the Rochdale goal had parried a Tom Bradshaw header.

Dale continued to create chances but in the 89th minute Barnsley doubled their lead; Ugbo with his second goal of the game from a tight angle when through one-on-one with Lillis.

Rochdale manager Keith Hill said after the game that he was pleased with the Dale performance despite the result. He added: "We looked good in attack, without converting any opportunities, so we'll have to brush up on that."
