Cricket: Norden out of LCB knockout beaten by Prestwich

Date published: 03 July 2017

Norden crashed out of the LCB knockout on Sunday, well beaten by Prestwich.

The match was almost a clone of the previous day’s play at Stag Park, with the side batting first struggling for runs and the team replying having little trouble.

This time round Hashum Malik lost the toss and his side was asked to take first knock.

Steve Pimm was first to go. He smacked Ryan Stanbury for a nice boundary, but next delivery he was taken low in the slips by Sam Holden.

Naveed Zamurad looked set to follow up his whirlwind innings of the previous day, but on 13 he swung to leg and saw Mike Hudson take a stunning catch just inside the rope as he battled to keep his balance and not go over the edge.

The catch was the highlight in the field for Prestwich who gave a brilliant athletic performance which, apart from one drop, could not be faulted.

Without addition Josh Tolley was trapped leg before by Tom Scott, and two runs later Ash Gowers hit straight to mid-on.

The troubles continued for Norden even when Prestwich turned to spin after Stanbury had bowled his quota of nine overs – six of them maidens – for only 19 runs.

Greg Butterworth was bowled by Andrew Bradley.

Dominic Humphreys and Simon North tried to pull Norden out of the fire and took the total up to 93 before the former was judged stumped for 22.

North survived a chance when dropped by the bowler, when on 17, but he failed to add to his score before being caught.

Martin Smith hit Norden's only six of the day in his 14 before being bowled by the returned Holden, Malik was run out for eight, and Chris Hartley was a first-baller.

It looked a hopeless task for Norden, and most expected the wicket to act as it had the day before.

It did exactly that and Prestwich were up to 56 before Stanbury was caught by Simon North off a skier.

Zamurad bowled Ali Raza with 83 scored, then Gihann Cloete and Sam Holden pushed Prestwich home with some big hits included.

Prestwich will travel to Ormskirk in the quarter-finals.
