Rugby League: Mayfield 8 - 19 Chorley

Date published: 03 July 2017

Table topping Mayfield entertained in form Chorley Panthers at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday but failed to consolidate their position with a win.

Chorley thwarted Mayfield’s attempt to take the two points with an impressive display of fast powerful rugby.

The first twenty minutes of the game were played in the middle third of the pitch with neither side giving an inch; defence was on top for both teams.

A failure to complete their sets and a lack of discipline cost Mayfield dearly and Chorley capitalised on the extra possession they received as a result of this.

Two converted tries gave Chorley the lead at half time but Mayfield were by no means out of it.

The second half saw Mayfield carry on giving away too many penalties and this cost them dearly.

Mayfield fought bravely, with Liam Whalley in particular making his presence felt, and two unconverted tries from Cameron Connolly and Matty Chrimes saw them back in contention.

The next score was always going to be vital but despite their chances Mayfield failed to take the lead and a Chorley drop goal and a converted try saw them complete the scoring.

The Chorley coaching staff gave the Mayfield man-of-the-match too James Ainley for non-stop effort.
