Littleborough FC to play in the Manchester Marathon match

Date published: 31 May 2017

Over 2,000 footballers of all ages, including Littleborough FC, will converge on Manchester on Friday to take part in a marathon football match to raise funds for the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing.

The Manchester Marathon Match will see over 300 teams play in the tournament that starts at 7.00pm on Friday, 2 June 2017 and ends at 7pm the next day.

The marathon, which was the idea of seven local teams in the Manchester football community, will be held at Curzon Ashton FC’s Tameside Stadium, Richmond Street, Ashton - under - Lyne, Greater Manchester, OL7 9HG.

The marathon organisers have been overwhelmed by the response. Teams booked to play include disabled children, girls, boys, adults, pro academy teams, amateur teams, grassroots teams, open age and semi - professional clubs.

Clayton Palmer for the organisers said: “This is a tangible way we can show our solidarity and support for those so sadly affected by the terrible event. It’s a marvellous testament to the community spirit in Greater Manchester and further afield that we have so many teams taking part.

“We have asked each player to try and raise £10 in sponsorship. If everyone manages to do this, we will raise over £20,000 plus the donations we will ask spectators to make, as entry to the ground free. All funds raised will be donated to the British Red Cross’ We Love Manchester Emergency Fund which has been established to support the victims and families of the attack.”

Manchester United and England legend, Paul Scholes is due to show his support at the marathon as is Manchester’s own boxing favourite and winner of world and English titles, Anthony Crolla.

From 2.00pm – 7.00pm on the Sunday there will be a family fun day too with children’s characters, cake stands and wares all selling in aid of the charity.
