Cycling: East Lancs

Last Wednesday Huddersfield Star Wheelers organised a women’s hill climb event, which is basically a time trial up a hill and the hill they selected was the climb up Standedge using the back road from Marsden towards Saddleworth.

Out of a field of 57 riders the East Lancs had two riders taking part with Cat Jessop coming in sixth place recording 5:26.9 mins and Georgina Cape in 10th place in 5:32.8 mins.

A club spokesperson said: "It was a great performance by both ladies in the top 10 not far behind the winner Helen Roby in 5:06.1 mins."

On Saturday afternoon Harry Middleton CC organised a 10-mile time trial on the D10/1 course based on the Rainford by pass near St Helen's. It was a very windy and it’s an exposed course so times were affected but the club's promising Junior rider Jack Millar recorded 25:38 mins; Roy Nield, 2401 mins; Georgina Cape, 27:50 mins Karen Bailey 29:59 mins.

Saturday evening saw Chorley CC organising a 10-mile time trial on the L101 course at Garstang, which again suffered with the windy condition. The club riders posting the following; Darryl Nolan, 27:52 mins; Mike Coulter, 28:14 mins; Niamh Coulter, 31:14 mins and Shaun Leonard, course PB of 25:24 mins

Sunday was the Maxxis 4 Road Race based at Clieves Hill near Ormskirk on Merseyside. The race was 13 laps of a four mile circuit for second and third category riders, which included East Lancs Oliver Huszar and Ben Trippier.

On the first lap a break of four riders went clear of the bunch and on the second lap a further 10 riders jumped across to join the break.

Sadly, for the riders in the bunch, there was a crash which held them up a little but it was enough for the break to establish a two minute lead which they maintained to the finish.

Both East Lancs riders featured well in the uphill sprint to the line with Huszar securing seventh and Trippier eighth.

The club had several riders in the 150 mile Humber Audax ride all clocking up points in the season long competition.

The club run was a car assisted ride from Chorley to Southport and back - well attended by a large group.
