Plenty of optimism despite defeat at Glodwick for Heywood Under-13s

Date published: 05 May 2017

Heywood’s Under-13s team began their Greater Manchester League season at Glodwick and despite losing their was plenty to be optimistic about.

Heywood opted to field first and it’s fair to say that, within the first five overs, the writing was on the wall as Glodwick underlined their batting talent.

Four out of the five batters retired on the maximum score of 30 as Glodwick set a formidable target of 149-1.

The Heywood bowlers stuck to their task, however, and Olivia Thomas took the visitors’ only wicket.

When Heywood went in to bat, it soon became clear that the opposition bowling line-up was as strong as the batting order.

Despite a contribution of 15 runs from 15 balls by Harry Moran, it was not enough as all the remaining players fell for less than double figures in an all-out total of 39.

The result doesn’t really tell the full story of the game, however, and if Glodwick continue this form they will certainly be the team to beat in the rest of the season.

A club spokesperson said: "The attitude of the Heywood players was a credit to the club, and at no point did anyone seem to be going through the motions having accepted the inevitable.

"As always, the coaching team will take learning points away from the game and work on areas for improvement."

The next match is at home to Prestwich on Sunday 7 May.
