Boxing: Tom Strong wins best fight at club show

Date published: 02 May 2017

Tom Strong won ‘best fight’ against Max Curtis, from Clayton, at Middleton Select ABC’s boxing show at Middleton Arena on Saturday.

He was awarded the trophy by Graham and Jean Cleworth of Ace Asphalting Ltd.

Boxing for Middleton Select’s blue team, Strong, Thomas Brady, Curtis Fitzsimmons, Nathan Jacobs and Joe Dinsdale won their matches, as did fellow blue Grant Kershaw, visiting from Hamer ABC.

Emily Whitworth was defeated by her opponent, Gracie Holland of Priory Park, and Connor and Callum Burton ‘fought like lions’, but ultimately were defeated by Lee Mitchell from Metro and Liam Phillips from Moss Side, respectively.

Two skills bouts also took place from Luke Brady and Mohammed Haroon to display their talent.

Josh Quinn was due to face Runcorn’s top opponent John James ‘JJ’ Taylor again just two days after defeating him, but Taylor pulled out of the match. Quinn has won 29 of 42 total fights to date and has faced Taylor three times.

Perry King and Josh Goodier were pulled out of the show due to weight difference.

Coach Martyn Lynch said: “I was so proud of my Middleton Select team on their home show at the Middleton Arena, they all did the club proud.

“A big thanks to all the coaches and raffle sales people, this show wouldn’t have gone so well without you all.”
