Cricket: Norden beat Crompton

Date published: 02 May 2017

It seems strange sitting on a cricket ground with play ended and a result achieved by 4.30 in the afternoon, but strange it had to be at Stag Park on Sunday as Norden brushed aside a challenge from Crompton who had started the season with two wins.

Crompton took first knock and were soon in trouble. Stephen Wright was caught behind by Ash Gowers, and Chris Humphreys quickly picked up another wicket when he had Denis Louis leg before.

Simon Wright and Darren Graham started a revival which promised a decent total, but Hashum Malik then destroyed the middle order, after Naveed Zamurad had enticed a catch behind off Simon Wright.

In his first over Malik had Graham caught behind by Gowers. He then bowled Kain Dean, Adam Good and Sam Rigby.

Greg Butterworth picked up two wickets when Richard Pertoldi had his stumps rattled and Tommy Lees was stumped, and there was a late one delivery one wicket spell for Josh Tolley who bowled Harry Dean for 14 – Crompton’s second highest score of the innings.

Norden had to reach 91 for five points, and they did it in 20 overs for the loss of one wicket.

Tolley was caught for 28. Rehan Udwadia did survive one huge appeal for a catch in the slips, but finished unbeaten on 31, and Naveed Zamurad was unbeaten on 30, the professional rounding off the win with a six over the clubhouse.
