Middleton Rugby Project off to great start

Rochdale Hornets Sporting Foundation and Dream Big Sports launched the Middleton Rugby Project with their first free rugby league session on Monday.

Despite the blustery conditions 13 children were present as they took part in a number of drills, games and activities with the guidance of the foundation’s community coaches.

One of those coaches is Michael Ratu, and he is excited about the project as he has spent a lot of time trying to develop the sport in the area.

He said: “It was great to see so many kids at Monday’s session, especially as some of them were familiar faces from my time working in the area in the past.

“It is the first time we have had a genuine link with the area and I am really excited about the project and the potential it has within Middleton.

“The end aim is to start up a Middleton Hornets team but at the moment we are looking to get as many children in the area taking part in our sessions, which are all free.”

Dale Harris, Dream Big Sports Co-Director added: "It was an extremely positive start to our new project in partnership with the Hornets.

“The session had a great atmosphere and it was fantastic to see the enthusiasm of the coaches reflected in the efforts shown by the children on the night.

“Some of the children had never played rugby before and seemed really excited about returning for future sessions.

“This is a great example of what a strong community partnership can deliver; the future looks bright for Rugby League in Middleton."

The sessions will take place every Monday from 4.30pm and will last an hour, but please note there will be no session on Monday 1st May due to the bank holiday.
