Rugby League: Mayfield Preview

Date published: 10 March 2017

Mayfield are on the road on Saturday travelling to Humberside where they take on West Hull.

Wests went down narrowly last week to a powerful Wath Brow Hornets after a tough uncompromising game.

This will be their first league game of the new season and as such they will be looking to record a good win and chalk two points on the board.

Mayfield have other ideas and will be travelling with a strong side as they look to consolidate last week’s superb win over St Pats with another victory.

Even at this early stage of the proceedings every game and every point is vital. This becomes evident when you look at last season’s results, Mayfield went down 14 – 0 at home to west Hull dropping the two points.

If they had won that game the extra points would have meant them finishing in second spot. With that in mind the side will make the trip in positive mood knowing they have the quality in the side to win this game.

Wayne English made a solid debut last week scoring a well taken try and showing that he has the ability to lift the young side and give them the direction on the pitch that they need.

Aidan Gleeson was still missing last week through injury, as was the impressive James Connaughton still recovering the effects of concussion from the Barrow. If these two are back in the reckoning it would be a massive boost to the squad.

The rejuvenated NWML side is also on the road with a shorter trip to Wigan to face Bold Miners.

Mayfield's game last week was postponed due to the rain while Bold went down at Bank Quay. Bold were promoted last season and are out to state their intent to do well in this second division clash.

Dave Harmer and Marvin Connolly will have a large squad to select from and will be hoping the players have retained their focus and go into this in the right frame of mind with the positive attitude they have shown up to now.
