Rugby League: Rochdale Mayfield 30 - 14 Wigan St Pats

Date published: 09 March 2017

Mayfield opened their 2017 league campaign with a quality performance and a win over Wigan team St Pats.

Sean Watkins opened the scoring after just two minutes, when he sliced through the line and dummied past the full back for a Zak Hartley converted try.

St Pats hit back with an unconverted try.

Mayfield, battle hardened by their cup exploits, scored three tries n the next 20 minutes. Matty Chrimes, Lee Registe and Sean Watkin giving Mayfield an 18-4 half time lead.

Mayfield were good value for the lead and, in truth, better goal kicking would have put them out of sight.

The returning Liam Whalley scored five minutes after the restart and Chris Hough's goal effectively sealed the game.

St Pats hit back with a try and a goal, but incurred the wrath of the officials who showed them two red cards for fighting.

Mayfield finished in style, with new signing Wayne English marking his debut with a try. Converted by Zac Baker.

The Wigan side got a consolation try on the whistle but the points went to Mayfield.

Best for Mayfield was Lewis Sheridan - strong in defence and quick in attack, whilst Sean Watkins took his brace of tries well.

Mayfield Team: Lewis Sheridan, Kieran Harmer, Wayne English, Matty Chrimes, Lee Registe. Paul Brearley, Zak Hartley. James Shaw, Chris Hough, Seta Tala, Callum Marriott, Sean Watkins, Zac Baker. Nick Hargreaves, Declan Sheridan, Sean Mulcahy, Liam Whalley.
