2,000 school pupils are set to take part in the Greater Manchester Winter School Games on 21 March after qualifying to take part in the Greater Manchester School Games after success in their local area events.

The athletes will be taking part in their sport and will compete with schools from across the county to become Greater Manchester champions. There will be 15 sports on show, including Water polo, Boccia and Basketball, taking part across 11 venues, including Sport City, the National Basketball Performance Centre and the National Cycling Centre.

The athletes will experience an opening ceremony which will bring a cultural aspect to the event before they make their way to their sporting competition, where they will compete to become Greater Manchester Champions in their sport. Gymnastics star Beth Tweddle MBE, elite Boccia player, Dan Wain and Water Polo Olympian Hazel Musgrove will be on hand to inspire the children at their competitions on the day.

The event is organised by Greater Manchester charity, GreaterSport, on behalf of the local organising committee for the event, who are supported on the day by over 200 young volunteers, the majority of which form the School Games Crew and are recruited from schools across the county. Members of the British Army and local university students will also be helping on the day to make sure the day runs smoothly.

Yvonne Harrison, CEO of GreaterSport commented: “The Greater Manchester School Games brings together schools from across the ten districts of Greater Manchester and is one of the largest events of its kind in the country. The Games is something we look forward to every year and we are delighted to have elite athletes Beth, Dan and Hazel at the event alongside our competitors and volunteers.”

A list of schools who have qualified for the event will be available on Tuesday 14 March.
