Christian Darlington turns out for Hornets

Date published: 06 March 2017

Sportsmad Christian Darlington was buzzing after Rochdale Hornets rolled out the red carpet and made him their guest of honour.

Nineteen-year-old Christian who has Duchene Muscular Dystrophy - a severe form of the condition - was invited to not only meet the players, but also lead the teams onto the pitch for their recent game against Halifax.

Christian, who lives at Rochdale Road, Firgrove was a guest of game sponsors Rochdale Borough Council.

He said: “It was dream come true for me to lead the Hornets out at home. I couldn’t have asked for more. I'm a big Manchester United fan but I'm also hooked on rugby league."

Councillor John Blundell, who was a carer for Christian a few years ago, was ecstatic the teenager was able to fulfil one of his boyhood dreams.

He said: “I used to be his carer but we are now lifelong friends. I was really proud seeing him lead the team on to the pitch and thankful to the mighty Hornets for letting him do so. It was a fantastic game.”

Council Leader Richard Farnell said: “I’d like to thank the Hornets for really getting on board and making the day special for Christian. What a fantastic lad and a fantastic club.”

Christian added: “John, Richard and the club have been absolutely brilliant with me. Even though they had an important game to prepare for, the players and staff still found time to chat with me. It was a definitely a day I’ll remember.”
