Rugby League: Hull University 12 - 22 Rochdale Mayfield

Date published: 28 January 2017

Rochdale Mayfield travelled Hull University and managed to avoid the potential banana-skin that the students offered with victory secured in the last 10 minutes.

Mayfield started well but got dragged into one man rugby - trying to prove their physical dominance, but Hull tackled well and when route-one was unsuccessful, Mayfield gave away silly penalties for poor discipline and gave the necessary breathers to the defence.

On their first visit to the Hull 25, Mayfield spread the ball wide right to left for Kieran Harmer to score in the corner. Too wide for Zac Hartley to convert.

Mayfield continued to incur the wrath of the officials, despite Hull rarely being onside, and penalties gave Hull good field position on the line.

Hull just failed to score when Lewis Sheridan managed to hold up an attacker over the line.

Hull did score with a fall over try, which was converted to give Hull the lead.

Mayfield came up with better play and Aiden Gleeson capitalised, crashing over for a try. Zac Hartley converted.

The Mayfield lead could have been extended with a Zac Hartley interception, but he was caught short of the line and poor ball discipline resulted in another error.

Following three consecutive Seta Tala penalties, Hull's number seven dummied through to score. The conversion was easy and the damage was made worse by the sin-binning of Lewis Sheridan for dissenting the award.

Mayfield were awarded a penalty for offside and from 25 metres out, Sean Watkins sped on to a short pass from Zac Baker to power through under the posts. Zac Hartley converted.

Hull dug in and defended manfully but a bit of pressure earned Mayfield quick play the balls that saw Callum Ogden crash over from short distance. Zac Hartley converted.

Mayfield were into the hat for the next round - to be played in a fortnight on 11 February, despite being far from their best.

Credit must go to the Hull University team for their brave efforts, whilst Mayfield cleared away some cobwebs and know they must do better in the weeks and months to come.
