Rugby League: Mayfield Preview

Date published: 26 January 2017

Mayfield eased through to the second round of the Oldham Standard Cup on sat with a relatively easy win over Hollinwood.

Hollinwood arrived short of players so several of the Mayfield lads agreed to help them out and pull on the opposition shirt for the game.

In a Mayfield team packed with youth there were some outstanding performances with Kieran Harmer in particular standing out after bagging five well taken tries.

Coaches Calland and Butterworth got a useful insight into the mindset of the lads who will be pushing for places in the first team this season and they will be putting that insight to work this Saturday afternoon as Mayfield step out in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup at the University of Hull.

The Hull side will not be used to playing at this level and a strong start from Mayfield should see them putting points on the board and hopefully going through to the second-round draw. That said Matt Calland won’t be underestimating the opposition as he runs the rule over his 2017- 18 squad.

The squad is boosted by the addition of more of last season’s youngsters coming to the fore. There is a supporter’s coach leaving for Saturday’s game at 10.45am there are a few spaces left at £10.00 anyone interested ring Simon on 07920 865 106.
