Mayfield preview

Date published: 01 September 2016

Mayfield are back in Kingstone Press Premier Division action on Saturday, welcoming West Hull to the Mayfield Sports Centre

With four games left Mayfield cannot afford to lose this game if the aim of finishing in the top three is to become a reality.

All of their remaining games are against top six teams and while that is a tough run in it also means that a win doesn’t just mean two points but also means their closest rivals are not gaining points, making every game doubly important.

West Hull are one point and one place above Mayfield so a win would see Mayfield leapfrog them in the table into fourth position.

This will be a tough ask for the club with players missing due to holidays and other commitments, also missing are Dec Sheridan and Jack Rush who are both taking part in the tour of Canada.

This will be an understrength side that Calland and Butterworth put out but it will also be a determined side a side that will play with pride and passion and that is worth a lot on the pitch in any game.

Calland and Butterworth will again go for the youth which has produced some great performances in recent weeks.

As the club reels at the loss of former player, coach and friend Steve Gartland it has been decided that during the game there will be a tribute to 'Garty'.

Chairman Simon Howe said: “We had a minute’s silence at Featherstone when we heard the tragic news but this is our first home game and we would like to give the fans and friends of Steve a chance to pay their respects at the club he gave so much too and also to acknowledge the legacy he left us.

“We have decided that like at Wembley and at the club and wherever friends were last week on the sixth minute of the game we will stand and give Steve a minute’s applause.

“Anyone who wants to come and pay their respects will be more than welcome.”
