Norden survive torrid last few overs against Monton and Weaste

Date published: 30 August 2016

Norden survived a torrid last few overs to pick up five points from Saturday’s home match against Monton and Weaste.

Chasing 159 to win Norden looked comfortable at 152 for three, but they were then hit by a brilliant spell of bowling by Danny Collins which sent them spinning to 156 for eight.

Collins had earlier delivered nought for 44 in three overs.

Having switched to the Woodhouse Lane end he began by bowling Martin Smith. Steve Pimm was caught without scoring, Harvey Fitton had his stumps wrecked first ball, Jack Harrison offered a safe catch to mid-wicket and Phil Docker was trapped leg before.

Collins now had five for 46, but still in there was Rehan Udwadia who finished unbeaten on 42 having had to watch the carnage at the other end.

Full marks to Monton who never gave up, and to Norden who kept plugging away when, for a time, it looked like only a four-pointer was on the cards.

Monton’s top four of Christiaan Jonker, Ben Chapman, James Viljoen and Jake Sandham managed only 26 between them, and Ali Chugtai added only two more, but Joe Kershaw scored a watchful 41 and Joshua Lenihan put on 43.

Danny Collins scored 17 and Monton managed to reach a reasonable 158, Nick Fairchild having taken four for 42.
