Council respond to Gulf War hero street name campaign

Date published: 12 November 2015

Rochdale Borough Council is in talks with the family of Conrad Cole, a soldier who was killed in the first Gulf War, in response to their campaign to get a road named in his honour.

The council’s armed forces support officer has been in contact with the family of Rochdale war hero Conrad Cole, to offer support and to look at ways to honour his memory.

The family wants a street in Conrad’s local neighbourhood of Kirkholt to be named after him so the council will work with them and local services to look at how they can help reach this goal.

Councillor Richard Farnell, the leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The Gulf War was the first war in history to be beamed into our living rooms. It allowed us as a nation to appreciate the work our armed forces do. As we approach the 25th anniversary of this conflict it is important to remember why soldiers like Conrad Cole made the ultimate sacrifice. Kuwait was invaded by Iraq and the work by our soldiers and soldiers from other Nations liberated Kuwait from a brutal dictator.

“Conrad Cole was a young soldier starting out in life, a journey that was cut short in tragic circumstances. It is important as a community we work together to look at ways we can honour the sacrifice made by Conrad.

"Lest We Forget.”
