People wishing to pay their respects to those who died in the service of their country this morning (Sunday 8 November) were not deterred by the poor weather as thousands, young and old, gathered outside of the Town Hall for the annual remembrance service.

At 11am, the last post was sounded followed by a two minute silence.

After prayers and readings, wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph.

Wing Commander David Forbes DL (Rtd), President of the Rochdale branch of the British Legion, said: “There has been an excellent turnout and we will be back here on Wednesday at 11am for Remembrance Day.”

Rochdale MP, Simon Danczuk said: “This is a special day in Rochdale. The turnout goes from strength-to-strength. It shows that Rochdale people want to remember the Armed Forces.”

Steve Rumbelow, Rochdale Borough Council CEO, said: “It is worthy of note how many people are here today. There is an increasing amount of public respect for the Armed Forces, not just historically but currently too.”

Along with The Royal British Legion and veterans, organisations parading included the Sea Cadets, Army Cadets and the Air Training Corps.

Rochdale Youth Band provided the music.
