Date published: 13 August 2015

Students at Rochdale Sixth Form College are celebrating after collecting their A-Level results and achieving a 99% pass rate for the fourth year running.

Anusia Battersby received an A*, two As and one B and will be the first ever student from Rochdale Sixth Form College to go to Oxford University.

Anusia, who lives in Slattocks, said that the news hasn’t sunk in yet. She said: “It hasn’t sunk it yet that I’m the first from Rochdale to go to Oxford. When it does, I think it will be very overwhelming.”

Anusia will be studying English language and literature at university and hopes to achieve a career in writing. She added: “I’ll hopefully end up writing in the theatre. I like the theatre and writing is something I have always enjoyed.”

Having previously visited Oxford University at the age of 14, Anusia always knew that was the university for her.

“I just fell in love with it and decided that it was where I wanted to go. I then went to the summer school at Oxford and Cambridge last year and just loved the people and the atmosphere. It was tough getting to where I am but it was worth it in the end. Rochdale Sixth Form College really helped me with achieving my end goal,” said Anusia.

“When I looked at Leeds it was somewhere that I could see myself being,” said Joe.

In his spare time Joe is a drummer and will be continuing his hobby once at Leeds.

He added: “I am in a band and my band mates are going to a different university in Leeds, so it is something that we are hoping we can continue with. I didn’t want to do drumming or anything at university because I wanted to keep it as a hobby and a passion.”

18-year-old Iqra Javed, from Marland, has dreamed of becoming a doctor since primary school and now after securing an A*, one A and one B, her dream could become reality as she is off to study medicine at Manchester University. She said: “Being at Sixth Form has been really good but it was hard sometimes. I am glad it has all paid off now. Being a doctor is something I have always wanted to do.”

Adam Mir is hoping that after his degree, he can complete a PHD and become a physicist. He achieved three A grades in his A Levels and will be heading to the University of Manchester. He said: “I think physics is really interesting and it is essentially the study of everything and I find that really interesting. Eventually I want to do a PHD and be a successful physicist.”

Zainab Kauser, from Spotland, is off to study medicine at Queen Mary University in London and hopes to become a successful doctor. She achieved three A* grades and an A in her A Level results. Zainab said: “I have always wanted to study in London and I think being from a small city there is a lot more going on in London, so it is always somewhere I have wanted to study. I want to be a doctor because I have always wanted to offer a service to people, but I haven’t decided on a speciality or anything yet.”

Chiara Mansfield achieved one A, one B and one C in her A level results and is now off to Liverpool John Moores University to study sports psychology. “I am really happy with my results. I did better than I expected,” said Chiara. “I love PE and psychology so wanted to do something where I could combine the two. I think I will go on to do a Master’s Degree in sports psychology and then hopefully work as a sports psychologist with a football team or something.”

Emma Butler, from Newhey, achieved two As and one B. She said: “I’m really happy. I got the grades that I was predicted but I didn’t think I would get them.”

Emma is now off to the University of Leeds and is grateful for her time at Rochdale Sixth Form College. She added: “It has been really good. It has been hard work but it has paid off so I am happy.”

He said: “I have always liked maths and have been good at it, so I always wanted to do something that involved maths. Rochdale Sixth Form College has been good for me. The teachers have been helpful and always kept me on track.”

Julian Appleyard, Principal at Rochdale Sixth Form College, said: “The results today are great and it is another fantastic year. The students have achieved a pass level of 99% again, so it just shows that the hard work has paid off, not only for the students, but the staff as well.

“It is fantastic that we have a student going to Oxford but to see so many of our students go off to university is also fantastic. Today is all about the students and their hard work.”
