Rochdale Judo Club public access defibrillator official launch

Date published: 18 July 2015

Mayor of Rochdale Councillor Surinder Biant and Mayoress Cecile Biant officially declared a new public access defibrillator at Rochdale Judo Club ready for use on Friday (17 July).

Located outside the clubs premises, the defibrillator went live on 999 on Tuesday, meaning that if anyone needs to use it and they ring the ambulance service, a code will be given to them to access to defibrillator.

Rod Cape, from Rochdale Judo Club, said: “We are pleased with how today has gone because by doing this, it just brings it to more people’s attention. Rochdale Council and all of the local councillors have also been very supportive in what we are doing.”

Members of Rochdale Judo Club raised £1,200 for the defibrillator, with HSB Engineering Insurance donating a further £500 to the cause.

Mayoress Cecile Biant said: “I think it is brilliant that the children raised the money for this project and to raise the amount that they did is great.”

Chairman of the Club, Warren Schofield added: “A lot of credit needs to be given to the kids who fundraised the money and to Rod for all of the work he has put into this.”

The club intends to offer training to members of the public in how to use the defibrillator.

Rod added: “We hope to motivate the community to get involved with this and to be proud of what they have here. All of the coaches at the club have been trained in CPR and how to use the defibrillator.

"We would like to thank Ken Brogden Fabrications in Heywood for doing work to the fence surrounding the building and the defibrillator and Pete Whitehead for putting the paving flags on the new area."
