Eight people were injured in a collision in Middleton.

Shortly after 2.00am on Saturday 11 July 2015, a Vauxhall Astra travelling south west along Rochdale Road and a Peugeot 307 travelling north east along Rochdale Road were in collision at the junction of Clough Road in Middleton.

The occupants of the Vauxhall Astra initially left the scene and were found a short time later.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, dangerous driving and failing to stop after a road traffic collision. He has been interviewed and bailed pending further enquiries.

A 19-year-old man and another 21-year-old man who were also in the car were treated at hospital for minor injuries and a third passenger, a third 21-year-old man, is being treated for serious internal injuries. He remains in hospital for treatment.

The four occupants of the Peugeot 307 are all being treated in hospital for serious injuries. Three of the occupants - a 22-year-old man, a 25-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man are being treated for suspected internal injuries and fractures and the fourth occupant, a 21-year-old woman, is being treated for a broken leg, arm, elbow and thumb.

A second man, 23, has since been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking (TWOC) and driving with excess alcohol. He has been bailed pending hospital treatment for a badly broken arm.

Sergeant Paul Higgins from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "This was a serious head on collision which has left several young people with serious injuries.

"We are trying to ascertain the circumstances of the collision and will be further interviewing the two men who have been arrested in due course. If anyone has any information about the collision I would urge them contact us.

"Due to the time of day, it was quiet on the road but we would ask if there are any witnesses, either to the collision itself or the vehicles in the moments before the collision, that they get in contact with police."

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 4742.
