The Heywood Model Railway Group (HMRG) held an open day today (Saturday 11 July) to show off their new premises and to encourage more members to join.

Held at the group’s new headquarters on River Street, the open day saw members and none members come together to build layouts, discuss layouts and to have a friendly chat.

HMRG secretary Roger Bottomley said: “We have had people come from all over the place today including Cheshire and Crumpsall.”

This was the first open day held by the group at their new premises.

The group was previously located at Warwick Mill in Middleton, but when that came under threat of sale to a developer, the group decided to move.

The group then found a site with potential at Park Works in Heywood. The site is twice the size, and with more space the group can now build larger gauge layouts and continuous run models.

“In our old space, we couldn’t really fit everyone in, but we have so much more room now. We have about 40 members all together but would be happy to welcome anymore,” added Roger.

Today’s open day saw a number of layouts in action, as well as refreshment for those in attendance.

Roger said: “They are toys for big boys and we all really enjoy it.”

It is now hoped that the open days will become regular events, with the group planning to hold them on the second Saturday of every month.

The group meet on a Monday evening from 6pm until 10pm and on a Wednesday during the day between 10am and 2pm.
