Date published: 17 June 2015

The former Fothergill & Harvey Textile Mill at Rock Nook, Summit, Littleborough is ablaze tonight (Wednesday 17 June).

Emergency services were called at 7.30pm and eight fire engines, an aerial appliance and 40 fire fighters are at the scene tackling the blaze.

The mill, constructed in 1886, has been a Littleborough landmark for nearly 130 years but has been derelict for many years.

Update 5.30am Thursday 18 June

Firefighters are damping down following the blaze.

GMFRS Station Manager Glyn O’Reilly, who is in charge of the incident, said: “When we arrived at the scene we were confronted with a five-storey mill with its top floor well alight.

“The unoccupied mill, which is about 60 by 40 metres in size, has been surrounded by firefighters who are working hard to tackle the blaze using a range of firefighting equipment including an aerial appliance that allows us to put water onto a fire from above.”
