Date published: 31 December 2014
Councillor Robert Clegg has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for his services to the community in Rochdale.
Speaking about the honour, Councillor Clegg said: “I am absolutely delighted. It is a huge honour and I am very humbled. I knew it was coming because I was told about six weeks ago so I have had to keep it a huge secret, which is hard for me.
“We are popping some corks this afternoon and seeing family and friends and having some celebrations but the amount of messages and well wishes that I have had today has been incredible. They are pouring in and the phone hasn’t stopped. I am very honoured.”
Councillor Clegg, who represents Wardle and West Littleborough, has been actively involved with Springhill Hospice for over 20 years and is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He first became involved with the Hospice as his role as Chief Executive of Rochdale Health NHS Trust. He played a key role in helping to raise funds to have it built and was on hand to celebrate with the Hospice at their recent 25th anniversary celebrations.
Julie Halliwell, CEO at Springhill Hospice, said: “We are all delighted to hear about Robert's honour. It is very much deserved. He is committed to the Hospice, and works hard for the people of the Borough of Rochdale. I can think of no one better to receive this award.”
Councillor Clegg has been the Chair of Corporation AT Hopwood Hall College for over eight years after retiring from a successful career in the NHS.
Derek O’Toole, Hopwood Hall College Principal, said: "Robert has overseen the continual improvement of Hopwood Hall College - with a high quality, innovative curriculum offer, outstanding facilities and financial health.
“Under Robert’s stewardship the College plays a vital role in the regeneration of Rochdale and the wider Greater Manchester economy."
He has also undertaken work within the Rotary Club of Rochdale East, including the organisation of two sponsored walks around Hollingworth Lake for the Alzheimer’s Society, which raised over £14,000.
Frank Hauxwell, Secretary of the Rotary Club of Rochdale East, said: “It is great news and we are very happy that Robert has been given this honour.
“He has been recognised for his work in the community which includes over 20 years at Springhill Hospice, his work within the education programme for the Rotary Club, which has seen over 8,000 children educated, his role at Hopwood Hall College and his work as a local councillor for Wardle and West Littleborough.”
