Rochdale man arrested following Burnley disorder

Eight people, including a  a 54-year-old man from Rochdale, have been arrested following disorder in Burnley last month.

Police launched an investigation after trouble flared in the Burnley Miner’s Club, Plumbe Street after the match between Burnley FC and Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday  18 January.

The violence, which is thought to have involved around 40 people, broke out at about 6pm and left a window at the club smashed and other damage. It is not clear whether anyone was seriously hurt.

The eight men have all been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder.

Searches will take place at their home addresses today (5 February).

Chief Supt Chris Bithell, of Burnley Police, said: “The level of violence shown by those involved in this disorder was mindless and obscene and today’s arrests show that we are determined not to tolerate thuggish behaviour of this kind linked to football.

“We will continue work hard with both the club and members of the public to identify all of those involved in this disgraceful disorder, and my message to those people is to expect a knock on the door from the police in the near future.”

Those arrested will be interviewed during the course of the day.
