St Edward's School to develop pond area with cash boost

Date published: 04 February 2014

St Edward's Primary School on Hanover Road, Castleton will be using a cash they have been awarded to develop their pond area.

The school received £3,000 after winning the vote as part of the Lloyds Bank Community Fund having received 35% of the public votes.

The money will be used to improve the wildlife pond in the school grounds as well as developing the learning area around the pond.

Deputy Head Kim Farrell said: “We will be renovating our fresh water pond, adding a decking area for group work, incorporating children’s art work and we will be purchasing pond dipping equipment.”

The school is an Ambassador Showcase Eco School hence there is a strong emphasis on environmental and sustainability issues. Previous projects at the school have included the introduction of a pair of pigs to help teach pupils about the nurturing and care of other people.

The school was nominated for the community fund by Leanne Brown, whose children attend the school, and the decision to improve the pond area was made by Year 6 pupils at the school.

Kim added: “We plan to allow the community to use this facility as we often have visitors from local nurseries and play groups and we regularly have visits from other schools.”

It is hoped that the project will be completed by the end of March.

The Lloyds Community Fund is currently in its second year and has given a helping hand to more than 1, 332 good causes in 333 communities across England and Wales.
