Heywood Foodbank helps up to 100 people a week

Date published: 29 August 2013

A Foodbank in Heywood is helping up to 100 different people a week according to Father Paul Daly, Priest at St Josephs Church in Heywood.

The Foodbank, which has been operating from the church for the past few years, is believed to be helping 80-100 people a week including families.

Father Daly said: “The people that come to the food bank are different people. It’s never the same people.”

After numbers of people visiting St Joseph’s church for food parcels increased, Father Daly decided to move the food bank to more permanent premises. “We are now located on Bethel Street, Heywood and are open Monday and Friday between 10am and 12pm.”

Heywood Foodbank hands out food parcels to those who need the help and often include food such as pasta, cereal and soup.

Father Daly said: “We try and offer food that is nutritious and can feed a family. For the more needy people who can’t cook, we offer things like ready meals.”

For people wishing to help the foodbank, food can be donated to the Foodbank by either taking it directly to the foodbank or the local church. Food donation baskets can also be found at Morrison’s and Heywood libraries.

For people wishing to donate their time to volunteer at the Foodbank, either contact Father Paul Daly at St Josephs Church on 01706 369777 and he will pass on the details or visit the food bank on a Monday or a Friday.

In 2012-13 Foodbanks fed 346,992 people nationwide. Of those helped, 126,889 were children. There are currently 370 foodbanks running in the UK.
