Ten mile sponsored walk for charity

Date published: 24 August 2013

Elizabeth Anker from Rochdale will be holding a sponsored walk to raise money so she can send parcels of food, toys, clothes and other goods to children living in a children’s home in Cambodia.

The sponsored walk will take place on Sunday 25 August, starting at 10am and will start at Wardle Reservoir and end at Hollingworth Lake.

Money raised from the sponsored walk will pay to send parcels to Cambodia and will include goods that people have donated including basic first aid items, cereal bars, stationary and dictionaries.

Elizabeth’s daughter Ashleigh is currently visiting Cambodia whilst she travels the world and has visited a children’s home where 50% of the children have been diagnosed with HIV. The home houses children aged from 2 to 16 and Ashleigh has described the children as being “the happiest children she has ever met.” The children look after themselves, feed themselves and are left to their own devices. They do not have any of their own toys and funding to the home has been cut.

Liz has eleven people taking part in the walk with her including friends, aunties and her 14-year-old daughter and three of her friends. Liz said: “I think it’s good for the teenagers to do something like this.”

The walk is being sponsored by Rochdale based company, New Look Windows and they have paid for everyone taking part to have matching t-shirts displaying a logo for the charity.

The cost of sending a package to Cambodia is £23.40 for just 2kg and £92.33 for just 5kg.

Elizabeth is requesting donations of items that the children may need and donations to cover the cost of sending the parcels. “We sent our first package last week as a sort of trial run. We have had a really good response from people,” added Liz.

Packages will take 5-7 days to reach the children and Walter Loopacki of New Look Windows has said he will donate £1,000 to the children’s home if Liz can provide evidence that the parcel has reached them. “That would be a brilliant donation,” said Liz.
