Raising money for guide dogs

Date published: 18 August 2013

Michael Cunningham and locals from Milnrow have been working together to raise £5,000 for guide dogs and held a beach party this afternoon (Sunday 18 August) to raise the remaining £813 needed to name a guide dog.

Working together with staff at The Free Trade Tavern on Newhey Road, Milnrow, Michael has been working with locals for almost two years to raise the grand total.

“The entire village has been working to raise the money needed. It is under my control but it all started at Milnrow workers,” said Michael.

The beach party included live music, games, fancy dress and a BBQ.

Local councillors attended the event including Councillor Alen Brett and Councillor Andy Kelly.

“The beach theme was done so everyone can have fun. The kids can have fun and so can the adults. It’s getting the community together,” said Michael.

The £5,000 raised will go to the guide dogs charity to name a guide dog. Once the dog is named, Michael and the fundraisers will get updates on the dog’s progress and eventually the dog will be offered to someone who needs it.

Michael isn’t shy of fundraising events and has raised £64,000 for various charities over five years. “I’ve raised money for Christies, Springhill Hospice, Meningitis and Children In Need over the past few years” said Michael.

The fundraising will continue after the beach party with a car boot and table top sale being held on 15 September.

“We’ve done pub crawls and other mad stuff, “ said Michael. “Hopefully we’ll reach the total today.”
