Chand Raat Community Fun Day Festival

Date published: 13 August 2013

Smallbridge Library opened its doors for the local community to experience their first Chand Raat Community Fun Day Festival.

The event was hosted by The Smallbridge Girls Group and The Smallbridge Youth Club as part of the Rochdale Youth Service project in partnership with STARA.

The diverse community was brought together in the celebration of Eid for the local Muslim community, and local residents took the opportunity to participate in the many activities such as the henna art, make up, bouncy castle, face painting and sports plus partake in Indian food.

The event was attended by the local ward councillors Martin Burke and Amina Mir, who the organsers said have showed their support throughout the project and praised the young people for planning and delivering the event as well as for their decision to donate all proceeds to charitable causes.

Rochdale Council Area Youth Worker Mohammed Zarafat said: "It was a fantastic event which the community participated in, the young people are working well together and are showing a positive attitude in wanting to learn about the diverse religious and traditional cultures that we have here in Rochdale.

"Furthermore, it was a fantastic gesture by the young people to donate all proceeds to charitable causes."

Mujahid Shah who is one of the young people who attends the youth club at Smallbridge Library stated: “We as young people have learned a lot of new skills in event management and we are thankful to all the local businesses on Stevenson Square as well as to STARA for all of their support in this project, and for their charitable donations.

"We are all now looking forward to commencing our next 12 week programme which includes fund raising, an environmental project, community clean up and the next community fun day in October."
