Plant a pot and Co-operate!

Date published: 12 August 2013

Rochdale Pioneers Museum held a ‘Plant a pot and Co-operate’ workshop with the idea of encouraging children to recycle.

Based around the Co-operative Wholesale Society seed factory, children were sent on a trail around the museum to find plant pots containing animal information cards.

The children were then asked to make their own plant pots using recycled milk bottles and pieces of material. These were called ‘Elly Planters’ as they were made in the shape of elephants with the bottom of the bottle being the plant pot.

Jennifer Broadbent from the Rochdale Pioneers Museum said: “The idea of the elephant is that elephants aren’t supposed to forget things, so this would encourage children not to forget to recycle”.

Each child was then presented with a packet of wild flower seeds for them to take home and plant in their own little pots.

These workshops take place every Wednesday from 12pm to 3pm:

Wednesday 14 August: Play Co-operatively - Participate in some co-operative games, play with some historical toys and make your own Victorian toy to take home

Wednesday 21 August: Co-op Fashionistas - Design an outfit for your own peg doll inspired by co-op fashions from the past.

Wednesday 28 August: Co-operative Dragons Den - What would you choose to sell in your co-operative store? Using recycled materials, design and create packaging for your co-operative inspired product.
