Local fundraising raises £5000 for The Christie Hospital

Date published: 08 August 2013

A cheque for £5,000 was donated to the Christie Hospital’s mobile chemotherapy unit on Monday 5 August after a string of successful charity events.

The cheque was presented to Angela and John Bannister from the Christie Hospital   by Marjory Hawker-Bond MBE at The Oxford Public House on Whitworth Road, Rochdale.

The money was raised through a variety of events organised by Andy O’Sullivan MBE and Andems Runners. Events included races, raffles and fitness to music.

Andy said: “In January I heard the launch of the £1 Million BBC Radio Manchester appeal for a mobile chemotherapy for The Christie and immediately I started putting together a series of ‘fun runs’ from the local pubs.”

As well as raising money through local events, Andy said: “I did a series of talks locally and some friends and neighbours made donations.”

Andy was helped out by Marjory Hawker-Bond who led the fitness to music classes. The  fun run races were officiated by the late Joe Salt, Colin and Brenda Robinson, Billy Knox, Marilyn, Ken and Eileen.

During 2013, a £1 million appeal has been running through BBC Radio Manchester to help cancer suffers undergo treatment in their own homes stopping them travelling to South Manchester.

Andy added: “We have already reached £500 for next five grand!”

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is located in Withington, Manchester and is one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe.
