Nutters Restaurant told to take down celebratory signs

Date published: 08 August 2013

Nutters restaurant has been ordered to take down their 20 year anniversary signs by Rochdale Council.

The restaurant put up the signs up on the main road on Saturday (3 July) and had intended to keep them up for two weeks.

They were told on Tuesday that they had 24 hours to remove them or face legal action. This despite the signs being almost identical to signs erected on lamp posts on Drake Street by... Rochdale Council. The Council's leisure arm, Link4Life has been displaying similar signs on posts outside Touchstones for a number of years.

Restaurant owner and chef, Andrew Nutter, said: “We put the signs up to celebrate 20 years in Rochdale to say let's be joyous, rather than see boarded up shops or To Let signs.

“They’re not a distraction, just nice signs that have been put up securely.”

Mark Widdup, Director of Economy and Environment at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The council is aware of Mr Nutter’s concerns. We will be speaking to Mr Nutter to discuss this issue and try and find a way forward.”

Following the threat of legal action, Mr Nutter was stunned to receive a call from the Council asking if he would donate a prize of a meal for two for their charity ball.
